Bridge Data Centres has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hong Kong-based biofuels company EcoCeres to explore the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to diesel in its backup power generation systems, Zachary Skidmore from DCD reports .
The deal is EcoCeres’ first in the data center market.
The partners stated that they will collaborate on developing technical specifications and practical solutions to enable the use of HVO in operations, with the goal of positioning Singapore as a central hub for the initiative. The MoU will also outline the framework for a pilot project designed to establish new sustainability benchmarks within the data center industry.
HVO is considered a direct substitute for conventional diesel, requiring no alterations to current engine systems. HVO can also be mixed with traditional diesel fuel and performs effectively in both cold and warm weather conditions.
Constraint?
HVO is increasingly being adopted across the data center industry, with several major operators now using it to fuel their backup generators. However, its broader rollout faces challenges due to a limited supply chain, as consistent availability is not yet guaranteed in all regions. Europe has emerged as a frontrunner in HVO adoption, with companies like AWS in Sweden, Vantage in Wales, and Stack Infrastructure in Norway incorporating the fuel into their backup power systems.
