SK Group and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are partnering to build a significant AI-focused data center complex in Ulsan, South Korea, as reported by Tech In Asia. The development will be located within the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex, with construction scheduled to begin in August 2025 and progress in multiple phases.

The initial phase will deliver 40 megawatts of capacity and is anticipated to go live by November 2027. Upon full completion by February 2029, the facility will operate at a total capacity of 103 megawatts.

The AI hub is designed to utilize around 60,000 GPUs, quadruple the capacity of the national AI center currently planned by the South Korean government, which aims to deploy 15,000 GPUs.

While the total investment amount hasn’t been publicly disclosed, industry experts estimate the project could generate an economic impact of 25 trillion won (approximately US$18.3 billion) and create around 78,000 jobs.

SK Telecom and SK Broadband, which have committed 3.4 trillion won (US$2.5 billion) toward AI development, are expected to finance a substantial portion of the project.

Ulsan was selected due to its proximity to SK Gas’ LNG power infrastructure, and the move aligns with AWS’s ongoing data center expansion across regions including Seoul and Incheon.
