OpenAI’s India push: major data center project proposed

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to build a large-scale data center in India as part of its Stargate infrastructure program, Bloomberg reported. The planned facility could deliver at least 1 gigawatt of capacity, which would rank it among the largest AI-focused data centers in the country.

OpenAI is said to be in talks with potential local partners. Although details around location and timelines are still unclear, industry sources indicate that CEO Sam Altman could unveil the initiative during his scheduled visit to India in September.

The move highlights India’s growing importance to the company, which counts the country as its second-largest user market. Earlier in August, OpenAI announced it would set up its first office in New Delhi later this year and has already incorporated a legal entity locally.

The Stargate program, introduced in January by the U.S. President Donald Trump, is a $500 billion private-sector infrastructure effort designed to expand global AI capacity, with major contributions from OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle.

Establishing a hyperscale AI data center in India would not only help OpenAI deliver localized AI services but also support the broader growth of the region’s digital economy.

As the company accelerates its global expansion, the India project stands out as a strategic investment in the Asia-Pacific market and a sign of OpenAI’s ambitions to become a key player in the next phase of AI infrastructure development.
