Trane®, part of Trane Technologies, has introduced the HSAG, a new air-cooled magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller designed specifically for the Asia Pacific data center market. The system combines oil-free magnetic levitation compressors with next-generation low-global-warming-potential refrigerants to address the region’s growing cooling and sustainability demands.

The launch reflects a broader shift across the data center sector. As artificial intelligence and cloud workloads expand infrastructure footprints across Asia, operators increasingly seek cooling technologies that can reduce energy intensity while maintaining uptime. Against this backdrop, Trane positions the HSAG as a solution engineered to meet both operational and environmental pressures facing hyperscale and colocation facilities.

“The HSAG represents a pivotal leap forward in our portfolio for the data center vertical,” said Bruce Zhongping Gu, Vice President, Engineering and Technology, Trane Technologies Asia Pacific. “Our customers in hyperscale data centers face increasing challenges of heat loads and stringent environmental regulations. The HSAG delivers on both fronts, offering market-leading efficiency and reliable performance even in extreme conditions, ensuring operations remain cool, stable, and sustainable.”

Designed for AI-Driven Data Center Expansion

Demand for digital infrastructure continues to accelerate across Asia Pacific. Artificial intelligence training clusters, cloud platforms, and large-scale colocation campuses increasingly operate at higher rack densities. Consequently, cooling systems must handle greater thermal loads without significantly increasing energy consumption.

Trane developed the HSAG to address these requirements. The system integrates magnetic bearing centrifugal compressors that operate without mechanical friction or traditional oil systems. As a result, the architecture simplifies maintenance while enabling sustained high-efficiency performance across operational cycles.

This design also reduces mechanical wear and eliminates oil management components, which often complicate long-term chiller maintenance. Consequently, operators gain improved lifecycle reliability and lower operational servicing requirements, two critical factors for mission-critical environments. This refrigerant selection aligns with tightening environmental regulations emerging across Asia Pacific markets, particularly in jurisdictions such as Singapore and Japan that continue to strengthen emissions frameworks.

Operational performance also plays a role in reducing indirect carbon impact. Under typical data center conditions, the HSAG achieves a Coefficient of Performance exceeding 5.0. Compared with conventional air-cooled variable-frequency screw chillers, the system delivers a 10–20% improvement in Integrated Part Load Value (IPLV). Consequently, facilities can lower electricity consumption while maintaining thermal stability across varying workloads.

Built for Extreme Climate Reliability

Cooling infrastructure across Asia must operate under highly variable environmental conditions. From dense urban heat islands to tropical climates, systems often encounter extreme ambient temperatures that challenge traditional cooling equipment. To address these constraints, Trane engineered the HSAG with a High Ambient configuration capable of operating in outdoor temperatures up to 52°C (125°F). This capability makes the system suitable for high-temperature regions including India and Southeast Asia.

Furthermore, the HSAG integrates several reliability features designed for always-on infrastructure. These include rapid restart capabilities, an integrated Uninterruptible Power Supply for control systems, and an Automatic Transfer Switch. Together, these mechanisms help maintain cooling continuity during power disturbances or extreme weather events.

Facility designers increasingly adopt flexible cooling strategies that support efficiency improvements such as elevated chilled-water temperatures and partial free cooling. Trane structured the HSAG platform to align with these evolving architectural approaches.

The chiller supports capacities ranging from 200 to 600 tons under data center conditions. In addition, it accommodates chilled water supply temperatures up to 30°C, enabling operators to integrate advanced cooling optimization techniques. This flexibility allows operators to reduce overall energy demand while maintaining thermal resilience across large-scale infrastructure deployments.

Strengthening Asia Pacific’s Sustainable Data Infrastructure

As the Asia Pacific region expands its digital infrastructure footprint, cooling technology plays an increasingly central role in shaping energy efficiency and environmental outcomes. Data center developers must balance rapid capacity growth with stricter regulatory and sustainability expectations.

With the HSAG launch, Trane aims to provide operators with a cooling platform designed for both performance and environmental responsibility. By combining magnetic bearing technology, ultra-low-GWP refrigerants, and climate-resilient engineering, the system reflects the industry’s broader shift toward high-efficiency thermal infrastructure.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
