AI Data Center Expansion Pressures Liquid Cooling Ecosystem

Alphabet’s Google has begun exploring new sourcing pathways for critical cooling infrastructure as AI data center deployments accelerate globally. According to sources cited in a Reuters report, the company is in active discussions with Chinese suppliers, including Envicool, to secure liquid cooling equipment amid tightening component availability.

A procurement team from Google’s Taiwan operations traveled to China earlier this month, reflecting mounting urgency across hyperscale infrastructure programs. The visit signals how supply constraints now extend beyond semiconductors into thermal management systems, an increasingly strategic layer in AI infrastructure design.

During the trip, the team met Shenzhen-based Envicool and scheduled discussions with at least one additional supplier. Neither company provided comment on the matter. However, the engagement highlights a notable dynamic: even as geopolitical tensions persist, Chinese manufacturers continue to play a functional role in global AI infrastructure supply chains.

Cooling Becomes Critical Bottleneck in AI Infrastructure Race

The rapid scaling of AI workloads has intensified demand for advanced cooling systems capable of handling high-density compute environments. As a result, liquid cooling technologies have moved from niche deployments to core infrastructure components across hyperscale data centers.

The global market for AI server liquid cooling systems is projected to expand sharply through 2026, driven by sustained investments from cloud providers and chipmakers. Consequently, suppliers capable of delivering at scale have gained strategic importance in procurement decisions.

Founded in 2005, Envicool has emerged as a notable participant in this segment. The company reported strong revenue growth across the first three quarters of the year, reflecting broader momentum in thermal infrastructure demand. At a recent industry event, Envicool showcased a coolant distribution unit tailored to Google’s specifications, signaling alignment with hyperscaler requirements.

An analyst report indicates that Envicool expects its liquid cooling revenue to grow sequentially this year, supported by a developing order pipeline that includes Google. Moreover, the company is expanding its production footprint through a new facility in Guangdong province, while advancing additional manufacturing projects in Thailand and the United States.

Fragmented Supplier Landscape Gains Strategic Relevance

The liquid cooling supply chain remains highly fragmented, with vendors specializing in discrete components across the system architecture. This fragmentation has created both complexity and opportunity for hyperscalers seeking to optimize cost, performance, and deployment timelines.

Chinese suppliers have strengthened their competitive position, supported by large-scale domestic data center construction that has enabled manufacturing efficiencies and cost advantages. In addition to Envicool, companies such as Lingyi iTech and Feilong Auto Components have expanded their presence in the data center cooling ecosystem.

However, the growing reliance on globally distributed suppliers underscores a deeper structural shift. AI infrastructure expansion no longer hinges solely on compute silicon, it increasingly depends on the availability and scalability of supporting physical systems. Therefore, procurement strategies now reflect a broader definition of critical infrastructure, where cooling capacity directly influences deployment velocity.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
