Firmus Expands into Indonesia Through a 360MW AI Campus with Nvidia

Australia-based AI infrastructure company Firmus Technologies is taking its first major step into Indonesia with an ambitious data center development

Australia-based AI infrastructure company Firmus Technologies is taking its first major step into Indonesia with an ambitious data center development that could reshape AI compute capacity across Southeast Asia. The company will build a 360MW Nvidia DSX AI Factory campus in Batam alongside Singapore-based DayOne under an eight-year partnership with Nvidia. The project marks Firmus’ first Indonesian deployment and reflects how AI infrastructure developers are increasingly targeting strategic regional markets beyond traditional hyperscale locations. The partnership goes beyond a new data center announcement. It gives Firmus direct access to Nvidia’s AI infrastructure ecosystem through a long-term commercial framework while enabling the company to support enterprise customers across the region. As AI demand accelerates, Batam combines strategic proximity to Singapore with strong connectivity, available land, and expanding digital infrastructure, making it an attractive location for large-scale AI deployments.

Batam campus anchors Firmus’ Southeast Asia expansion

Firmus said it will develop the 360MW Batam facility with DayOne under its long-term collaboration with Nvidia. Unlike the company’s Australian developments, which primarily serve hyperscale cloud providers, the Indonesian campus will target a broader base of AI-native enterprises. DayOne has already started construction on the facility and plans to bring it online during the first quarter of 2027. The project positions Indonesia as an increasingly attractive destination for large-scale AI infrastructure investments as regional demand for compute capacity continues to climb. Consequently, the expansion strengthens Firmus’ presence beyond Australia while reinforcing Nvidia’s AI infrastructure footprint across the Asia-Pacific region.

Beyond the physical campus, the partnership includes a revenue-sharing and credit support agreement that gives Firmus access to Nvidia infrastructure for customers. The arrangement covers as many as 170,000 Nvidia AI accelerator chips across 2027 and 2028, providing substantial compute capacity for enterprise AI deployments. Firmus said the agreement is expected to generate between US$25 billion and US$30 billion in committed offtake agreements during the partnership’s first six years. Those projected commitments highlight how infrastructure providers are increasingly securing long-term commercial agreements before facilities reach full operational capacity. The model reflects growing confidence that enterprise AI demand will continue outpacing available compute resources throughout the decade.

AI demand outweighs market volatility

The announcement arrives during a period of heightened volatility across AI-related equities as investors debate future demand for advanced AI chips. However, Firmus executives indicated that customer demand remains the primary driver behind the company’s expansion strategy rather than short-term market sentiment. “Worry over chip demand has created a volatile environment for AI stocks in recent weeks, but that market sentiment is “largely irrelevant” to how Firmus is building its business,” Firmus co-chief executive Tim Rosenfield said. “We’re building our business based on demand that we’re seeing from customers and contracts that we’re closing,” he said. “Funding and capital remains extremely strong, as we speak.” Firmus added that it expects continued enterprise demand to support its infrastructure growth pipeline, with long-term customer commitments forming the foundation of future deployments.

Firmus began operations in Tasmania in 2019 as a Bitcoin mining company before pivoting toward AI infrastructure as demand for accelerated computing expanded across Asia-Pacific. That transition mirrors a broader industry shift, where operators with expertise in high-density power and GPU deployments have repositioned themselves to support generative AI workloads. The company has steadily expanded its development pipeline across Australia and Singapore as enterprise AI adoption continues to grow. Earlier in 2025, Firmus signed an agreement with CDC Data Centers to develop up to 1.6GW of Nvidia-powered data center capacity across Australia by 2028. The company has also previously stated that the Southgate project under that partnership has secured an unnamed global hyperscaler customer, although Rosenfield declined to identify the customer.

IPO speculation remains unanswered

Firmus was valued at approximately US$5.5 billion during an investment round completed in April that included backing from Nvidia. Industry observers have linked the company’s rapid infrastructure expansion with expectations of a potential public listing during 2026. Rosenfield declined to comment on any IPO plans. Even so, the Batam development demonstrates that Firmus continues prioritizing large-scale infrastructure execution as it expands across the Asia-Pacific AI ecosystem. The company’s latest partnership underscores how regional AI infrastructure competition is shifting beyond chip supply alone toward securing strategic locations, enterprise customers, and long-term compute capacity.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
