Beetaloo Energy Maps Gas-Powered Data Center Expansion Strategy

Beetaloo Energy Australia is bringing Halliburton into an emerging plan to link Northern Territory gas production with large-scale computing demand

Beetaloo Energy Australia is bringing Halliburton into an emerging plan to link Northern Territory gas production with large-scale computing demand across Asia. The companies signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding on July 30 covering Beetaloo Digital, a proposed gas-to-power and data center development near Darwin. Halliburton will provide technical expertise spanning upstream field development, drilling and project execution as Beetaloo Energy evaluates the gas resources that could underpin the project.

The move gives Beetaloo Energy a major oilfield-services partner as it tries to build an integrated infrastructure model around its gas assets. Beetaloo Digital, a wholly owned subsidiary, is intended to sit at the center of that model, connecting upstream production with pipelines, modular power generation and data center infrastructure. The concept targets hyperscale computing and AI workloads that require continuous electricity rather than conventional, intermittent demand. That makes the project less a conventional data center development and more an attempt to create a dedicated energy-to-compute supply chain.

“Following the Northern Territory government’s decision to grant us exclusivity over the Weddell site, we are committed to building a world-class consortium capable of delivering this opportunity,” Beetaloo Energy CEO Alex Underwood said in the company’s release. The statement points to the company’s broader strategy of assembling specialist companies before committing capital to the physical infrastructure. Halliburton’s involvement gives the consortium upstream engineering capabilities while leaving room for additional partners in power, pipelines and digital infrastructure.

Weddell Becomes the Proposed Gateway to Asia

The proposed development would sit at Weddell, a rural area southeast of Darwin that Beetaloo Energy has identified as the location for its data center ambitions. The Northern Territory government granted Beetaloo Energy Australia Ltd. exclusivity over 185 hectares at the site for feasibility work, giving the company a one-year window to test the project’s commercial and technical case. The location matters because the project is designed around access to both local energy resources and Darwin’s international telecommunications infrastructure.

Gas would travel more than 320 miles from the Beetaloo Basin toward Weddell through a proposed pipeline connection. The concept calls for modular gas-fired generation operating independently of the Northern Territory grid, allowing the computing facilities to control their own power supply. That structure could give the project a direct relationship between gas production and electricity consumption, reducing dependence on existing grid capacity. It would also position the data center as an energy infrastructure project with a digital customer attached to it.

AI Demand Gives Beetaloo Gas a New Commercial Role

“Hyperscale data centers and AI facilities operate continuously, creating durable and predictable demand,” Underwood continued. “That demand profile supports long-term field development, accelerates upstream investment, and positions Beetaloo Digital as a potential large-scale, sustained cash flow generator for Beetaloo Energy.” The argument reflects a growing infrastructure thesis in which data center demand can provide an anchor customer for energy projects that might otherwise face uncertainty around long-term consumption. For Beetaloo Energy, the attraction is the possibility of tying a predictable digital load directly to upstream gas development.

The model also changes how the company can think about the value of its gas resource. Instead of treating production purely as a commodity business, Beetaloo Energy is pursuing a structure in which gas becomes an input into electricity generation and computing capacity. That could create a longer chain of economic value from the same resource, stretching from drilling and processing through power generation and digital services. The approach places energy availability at the center of the data center proposition rather than treating electricity as a separate utility requirement.

The Hard Part Is Turning Gas Into Bankable Compute

Still, the Beetaloo Digital proposition illustrates why energy-rich regions are increasingly looking at data centers as industrial customers rather than standalone technology assets. A successful development would require the company to coordinate upstream gas production, processing, long-distance transportation, generation, cooling, fiber connectivity and data center construction within one investment framework. Each component carries its own technical, financial and regulatory risks, making integration the central challenge rather than simply securing land. The Halliburton agreement addresses one important part of that equation, but it does not resolve the capital or digital infrastructure requirements.

The project remains subject to concept studies, consortium formation, financing and applicable government and regulatory approvals. Beetaloo Energy therefore has a long path between its current MOU and an operating AI infrastructure campus at Weddell. If that path succeeds, the Northern Territory could gain a new model for converting a remote gas resource into a digitally connected export platform serving Asian computing markets. If it does not, the project will remain an ambitious example of how the AI boom is reshaping the commercial logic around energy resources in Australia.
