Konin Data Center

Energa Obrót, renewable energy developer Central Energy Group (CGE), and the municipality of Konin have signed a letter of intent covering a major data center development in western-central Poland. CGE will lead the project, with construction targeted for early 2027 and investment expected to reach just under €3 billion ($3.4 billion). The initial phase is designed around 100MW of IT capacity, while later development could push the total to 260MW if Konin approves the additional stages. The agreement puts the project among Poland’s more significant emerging AI infrastructure developments, particularly as power availability, compute density, and industrial energy integration become increasingly connected.

“The scale of this investment speaks for itself,” said the energy retailer’s vice-president, Paweł Nowak. “The construction of the Konin Data Center is a milestone in the development of the digital services sector in Poland.” His comments underline the scale of infrastructure required to support Poland’s expanding digital economy, where large compute facilities increasingly depend on access to substantial and reliable power. The proposed capacity makes the project more than a conventional server facility, positioning it around the infrastructure requirements of high-performance and AI-oriented computing.

Konin project targets phased 260MW expansion

CGE first announced plans for the Konin facility in April 2026, outlining a potential 260MW development. The company is working with real estate consultant JLL on the project, which has already moved beyond an early conceptual stage through approvals for the first phase. The municipality granted the required environmental permit in January 2026 and the building permit in May 2026, establishing a regulatory foundation for construction to proceed toward the planned 2027 start.

The physical design reflects a large-scale campus built around several different infrastructure functions rather than server halls alone. The first phase will contain four buildings dedicated to servers, alongside separate structures for offices and technical infrastructure. The development plan includes 12 underground fuel tanks, adding another layer to the facility’s backup and operational infrastructure as the site prepares for a substantial computing load.

Power strategy links coal, renewables and storage

The project’s energy architecture is particularly important because its proposed IT capacity will create a substantial continuous electricity requirement. According to Inzynier budownictwa, the power mix is expected to involve the Konin coal-fired power plant, battery energy storage systems, and several solar plants. CGE already owns a 2MW solar facility and an 18MW onshore wind farm located in the central Polish villages of Rychwał and Kraśnica, respectively.

That combination points toward a broader approach to supplying large computing loads, where generation assets, grid infrastructure, and storage can operate around the requirements of a high-density digital facility. The project does not rely on a single renewable source, with the planned energy architecture incorporating generation and storage alongside the existing coal-based power resource. Meanwhile, CGE’s existing renewable assets provide an established connection between the developer’s energy portfolio and the electricity requirements of the proposed data center.

The proposed infrastructure goes beyond electricity supply by considering what happens to the heat generated by the servers. A district heating network has been proposed to capture waste heat from the data center’s server rooms and redirect it into local heating infrastructure. Such a system could connect the thermal output of a large computing facility with an existing municipal energy requirement, turning server heat into a potentially useful local resource rather than treating it solely as a cooling burden.

Konin sees economic impact beyond compute capacity

For Konin, the proposed development carries implications beyond the addition of computing infrastructure. Mayor Piotr Korytkowski has welcomed the LOI and said the project could help transform the municipality into an AI hub serving Poland and Europe. “We also expect significant revenue from property taxes,” he added.

The local economic proposition therefore extends into municipal finances as well as infrastructure development. A project approaching €3 billion in total investment can affect construction activity, industrial services, energy infrastructure, and the tax base surrounding the facility. However, the scale of those effects will depend on how quickly the planned phases progress and whether the municipality approves the additional capacity beyond the initial 100MW.

The project’s 100MW first phase provides the immediate benchmark for its infrastructure requirements, while the potential 260MW buildout establishes a much larger long-term footprint. For operators and infrastructure developers, that expansion pathway matters because electrical capacity, cooling systems, backup infrastructure, and supporting buildings must accommodate future compute requirements without forcing the entire development to arrive at once. The phased structure gives CGE room to align construction with demand while retaining the option to expand the underlying infrastructure.

Poland’s data center pipeline keeps expanding

Konin is entering a Polish market that has attracted several large data center proposals in recent months. Polcom is developing a 40MW facility in Skawina in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, adding another significant project focused on expanding domestic cloud infrastructure. In Choczewo in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, WBS Power has spearheaded plans for a much larger 3.2GW data center project.

The range of proposed capacities illustrates how Poland’s data center market is beginning to encompass projects with very different power profiles. A 40MW facility represents a substantial deployment, while Konin’s potential 260MW buildout moves the project into another scale of infrastructure planning. The 3.2GW proposal in Choczewo points toward an even larger category in which data center development becomes closely tied to power generation, transmission, land development, and industrial-scale energy planning.

For the Konin data center, the next phase will depend on the transition from agreements and permits into construction and infrastructure delivery. The planned early-2027 construction start gives the project a defined target, while the first 100MW phase establishes the initial technical and commercial scale. If the additional phases move forward, the resulting 260MW development would make the project a substantial component of Poland’s emerging AI infrastructure landscape, with its power strategy and proposed heat-reuse network becoming as important to the story as its server capacity.
