AI Infrastructure Buyers Must Audit Software Licenses Before Deployment

An AI infrastructure purchase can appear commercially sound until software requirements change the economics of deployment. A buyer may secure accelerators, power capacity, cooling infrastructure and network bandwidth, yet still face restrictions on how those resources can be used. Software licenses can determine whether workloads run across multiple servers, move between environments or support the intended number of users. They may also introduce recurring fees that change the cost of operating a cluster long after the initial hardware purchase. These obligations deserve the same scrutiny as power availability and hardware compatibility because they can affect how much infrastructure an end user can actually use. Procurement teams should therefore evaluate software entitlements alongside hardware specifications, performance benchmarks and service-level commitments. Those measures alone cannot establish whether every required software component is authorized for the intended deployment. AI infrastructure buyers should treat software licensing as a deployment requirement, not an administrative task to complete after procurement.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly.
