The End of Passive Backup Thinking

A computing site can remain connected to the grid and still experience an electrical environment that demands more than conventional outage protection. Accelerating AI workloads, changing accelerator utilization, power-conversion behavior, and the coordinated operation of cooling equipment can alter the load presented to the electrical supply even when the facility has no immediate intention of switching to standby generation. The engineering requirement extends beyond maintaining stored energy for an outage, because the site must also determine whether its electrical architecture can manage load fluctuations without allowing disturbances to propagate through connected power systems. Traditional uninterruptible power supply systems protect critical loads against interruptions and help maintain continuity while other power sources respond, yet their presence alone does not establish that a site can actively manage every fluctuation associated with AI computing.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
