Against that backdrop, SLB and Liberty Energy have formed a strategic partnership aimed at delivering modular power and infrastructure solutions that enable AI and high-performance computing (HPC) facilities to come online faster.
Rather than waiting years for conventional utility interconnections, the companies will focus on behind-the-meter power systems capable of supplying electricity independently of traditional grid expansion schedules. The strategy reflects a growing shift within the digital infrastructure industry, where power availability is becoming as valuable as land, fiber connectivity, and computing hardware.
Behind-the-Meter Power Targets Grid Connection Delays
The partnership centers on modular infrastructure designed to bypass one of the industry’s most persistent bottlenecks: utility connection timelines. Across many AI markets, developers have secured land, financing, and customers but continue facing delays because electrical infrastructure cannot be delivered quickly enough. Behind-the-meter generation offers an alternative deployment model by allowing data centers to operate using dedicated on-site power systems while broader grid infrastructure continues to expand.
The approach is becoming increasingly attractive as hyperscale operators pursue aggressive AI deployment schedules that cannot always align with multi-year transmission and utility upgrade projects. Commenting on the announcement, Gavin Rennick, president of SLB’s New Energy and Industrial business, said: “The bottleneck in AI infrastructure is no longer just compute. It is the ability to deliver infrastructure and power on the timelines the market now demands.” He added that combining complementary infrastructure and power capabilities would help developers accelerate new data center capacity deployment.
Partnership Expands Beyond Standalone Power Systems
The collaboration extends beyond temporary electricity supply. SLB and Liberty Energy also plan to jointly develop hybrid power systems, advanced energy technologies, and digital energy management capabilities designed specifically for future AI campuses. By integrating multiple technologies into a unified platform, the companies aim to provide customers with infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly power-intensive AI workloads while maintaining operational flexibility. As rack densities continue increasing, developers are placing greater emphasis on integrated power architectures that combine generation, energy management, monitoring, and long-term operational support instead of relying solely on conventional utility infrastructure.
SLB Builds Momentum in Modular Infrastructure
The announcement builds upon SLB’s expanding presence in modular infrastructure deployment. Since 2024, the company has delivered more than 1.3GW of modular infrastructure worldwide and expects that figure to exceed 2GW before the end of the year. The milestone illustrates growing market demand for modular deployment models capable of accelerating AI infrastructure construction while reducing dependence on traditional project timelines. Rather than treating power as a supporting utility, developers increasingly view electrical infrastructure as a strategic asset that directly determines how quickly computing capacity can reach customers.
Liberty Strengthens Its AI Power Portfolio
Liberty Energy has also expanded its position within AI infrastructure through several significant initiatives. The company previously announced a 1GW agreement with Vantage Data Centers, alongside a Memorandum of Understanding with DC Grid focused on off-grid natural gas generation for digital infrastructure. Those projects demonstrate Liberty’s broader strategy of supporting AI deployments through diversified energy solutions capable of addressing growing electricity demand. Ron Gusek, CEO of Liberty Energy, highlighted the industry’s changing requirements, noting that the scale and complexity of AI energy infrastructure are fundamentally changing how power systems are built and deployed. Gusek emphasised Liberty’s comprehensive power service platform is engineered to meet this transition, as customers increasingly prioritise tailored, integrated solutions.
AI Infrastructure Shifts Toward Integrated Energy Platforms
The partnership underscores a broader transformation taking place across the AI infrastructure sector. Until recently, discussions around data center expansion centered largely on processors, networking equipment, and real estate. Today, power infrastructure has emerged as one of the industry’s defining competitive differentiators. Companies capable of delivering electricity alongside engineering, modular construction, digital energy management, and long-term operational support are increasingly positioned to accelerate hyperscale deployments.
As AI computing demand continues growing worldwide, infrastructure providers are evolving beyond equipment suppliers into integrated platform developers.
