Why Grounding Matters in AI Infrastructure Procurement

An AI data center can meet its power and cooling targets while still carrying electrical risks. Available megawatts cannot establish whether protective systems will respond correctly during an electrical fault. Grounding rarely receives the same commercial attention as GPU availability, rack density or cooling capacity. Yet it affects equipment safety, electrical protection and the way engineers investigate faults. Buyers should examine these requirements before accepting a new facility or expanding existing capacity. Treating grounding as a procurement requirement makes electrical safety part of the infrastructure decision. Grounding involves more than connecting electrical equipment to earth. Protective earthing provides a fault-current path, while bonding maintains electrical continuity between relevant conductive parts. These functions help limit dangerous voltage differences and support the operation of protective devices. A grounding electrode connects the installation to earth where the design requires one. However, that connection cannot replace an effective fault-current path within the electrical distribution system. Buyers therefore need evidence of the complete protective arrangement, not just a single measurement.
