Adani Energy Solutions has secured a ₹4,700-crore transmission project in Maharashtra designed to evacuate up to 4,500 MW of renewable and storage power. The company emerged as the lowest bidder through India’s Tariff Based Competitive Bidding process for the Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4500 MW) – Part A. The win gives Adani Energy Solutions another large-scale grid asset at a time when renewable generation, pumped-storage development and transmission capacity are increasingly becoming interdependent. The project also expands the company’s role beyond moving electricity from generators to consumers, placing its transmission network closer to the infrastructure needed to balance increasingly variable power flows.

Adani Energy Solutions will execute the project through its special purpose vehicle, Satara Power Transmission Ltd., with a targeted completion timeline of 36 months. The company expects the development to require approximately ₹4,700 crore in capital expenditure, creating a substantial new investment commitment within its transmission portfolio. The project will add 562 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity to the company’s network. That combination matters because the grid challenge around renewable-heavy regions increasingly involves both moving electricity over long distances and handling large volumes of power at key substations.

4,500 MW Evacuation Capacity Targets Renewable Growth

The core infrastructure will include a new 765/400 kV substation at Satara, giving the project a high-voltage backbone capable of handling large-scale electricity transfers. Adani Energy Solutions will also develop the Kolhapur-Satara 765 kV double-circuit transmission line as part of the network expansion. The company will augment the Kolhapur pooling station and build associated transmission infrastructure required to connect the wider system. Together, these assets create a transmission corridor designed around the scale and geography of renewable generation and pumped-storage development rather than a conventional incremental grid upgrade.

The network will help evacuate renewable electricity generated in Karnataka toward major load centres in Maharashtra. It will also support the emerging pumped-storage ecosystem spanning Satara, Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where storage capacity can help shift electricity availability across different periods of demand. That creates a more strategic role for the project because pumped-storage plants depend on robust transmission connections to charge and discharge electricity at meaningful grid scale. As a result, the infrastructure can become an important link between southern renewable generation and western India’s large electricity-consuming centres.

Pumped Storage Becomes A Transmission Driver

India’s renewable buildout is changing the way transmission developers approach grid planning, with storage increasingly shaping where major transmission investments need to go. Pumped-storage projects can provide dispatch flexibility by storing electricity and releasing it when the system needs additional supply, making their grid connections critical to their commercial and operational value. Satara sits within a broader development zone that connects Maharashtra’s growing storage ambitions with demand centres around Pune and Mumbai. The new transmission infrastructure therefore addresses not just renewable evacuation but the physical connectivity required for a more flexible power system.

Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions, said pumped-storage projects are becoming an important part of India’s clean energy transition by providing flexibility and reliability to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the grid. “The Satara transmission project will create a vital transmission backbone to supports both renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment, strengthening power flows between Southern and Western India,” Patel said.

Adani Energy Solutions also framed the project within India’s broader push to expand non-fossil electricity capacity. The country’s target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 will require generation assets to grow alongside transmission infrastructure capable of carrying their output. Meanwhile, the growing role of storage means transmission planning increasingly has to account for electricity that can move through the grid in both conventional generation flows and time-shifted storage cycles.

Maharashtra Project Links Southern Generation With Western Demand

The Satara project gives the western grid a new high-capacity connection between renewable generation sources and major demand centres. Its Karnataka-to-Maharashtra evacuation function is particularly relevant as southern India continues to add renewable generation while Maharashtra remains one of the country’s largest electricity-consuming states. The inclusion of pumped-storage infrastructure in the project’s design further links generation, transmission and storage into a single system-level investment. That architecture could become increasingly common as grids move from simply adding renewable megawatts toward managing when and where those megawatts can deliver electricity.

For Adani Energy Solutions, the award adds another major transmission asset to a portfolio already approaching 30,000 circuit kilometres. The project’s 9,000 MVA transformation addition also demonstrates why substations are becoming as strategically important as transmission corridors in India’s power expansion. High-voltage lines can move electricity across regions, but substations determine how effectively the grid can transform, route and integrate those flows into different parts of the system. The Satara build therefore represents a broader infrastructure bet on the grid architecture required to connect renewable generation with storage and high-demand markets.
