AmpTank Plans 200 MW AI Data Center in Finland

DataTank AG, part of the Swiss-Finnish AmpTank Group, has secured legally valid building permits for a 200 MW data center in Utajärvi, Finland. The company also signed a binding grid connection agreement, clearing a major milestone for the project. Its Finnish subsidiary, Data Tank Nordic Oy, will develop the facility. Construction is expected to begin during the second half of 2026. The site will receive 200 MW of immediately available power. As a result, the project can support rapid AI and high-performance computing deployments. Additionally, the facility will include battery energy storage systems. These systems will improve grid stability, increase demand flexibility, and boost overall energy efficiency.

Project Focuses on AI and High-Performance Computing

AmpTank designed the Utajärvi facility to meet rising AI computing demand. The company expects the campus to support advanced AI infrastructure and high-performance computing workloads. Consequently, the project aligns with the industry’s shift toward larger, power-intensive AI data centers. Finland offers several advantages for AI infrastructure investments. The country provides abundant renewable energy, a stable electricity grid, and naturally cool weather. Moreover, the cooler climate reduces cooling requirements and improves operational efficiency. Finland also continues to strengthen its position as a strategic location for sovereign AI and European digital infrastructure.

Battery Storage Strengthens Grid Flexibility

Battery storage forms a key part of the development strategy. AmpTank believes the systems will reduce load uncertainty and improve demand flexibility. This capability becomes increasingly important as AI workloads consume more electricity. Therefore, battery storage can help balance demand while supporting grid reliability. Furthermore, AmpTank plans to sign power purchase agreements with new renewable energy projects. These agreements will secure long-term electricity supplies while adding more renewable generation to Finland’s power network.

AmpTank Pursues a Larger AI Infrastructure Expansion

The Utajärvi project supports AmpTank’s broader expansion strategy. The company aims to develop more than one gigawatt of data center capacity across Finland, the Nordics, and South America. Its strategy emphasizes sustainable AI infrastructure in regions with reliable electricity and strong renewable energy resources. Alongside infrastructure investments, AmpTank plans to open an office in Oulu, Finland. The office will support AI startups and encourage local entrepreneurship. Additionally, the company wants to help businesses and communities accelerate AI adoption through targeted initiatives and industry collaboration.

Executives Highlight Local AI Development

AmpTank Chairman Neal Kumar emphasized the company’s broader vision for regional AI growth.

“AmpTank is proud to be building infrastructure not only for AI, but also for local AI adoption and entrepreneurship in the communities where our data centers are built and operated. Our aim is to enable the next generation of AI application entrepreneurs to build and scale locally.”

Meanwhile, AMP Tank Finland Oy Chairman Hannu Koivusalo thanked several project partners. He acknowledged the contributions of the Municipality of Utajärvi, Sitema, Sweco, and Fingrid throughout the development process.
