DAMAC and AiOnX Expand Italy’s AI Infrastructure with Milan Data Center Investments

Italy’s ambition to become one of Europe’s leading artificial intelligence infrastructure markets is gaining fresh momentum as two large-scale data

Italy’s ambition to become one of Europe’s leading artificial intelligence infrastructure markets is gaining fresh momentum as two large-scale data center developments take shape outside Milan. UAE-based DAMAC Digital and London-headquartered AiOnX are independently advancing major projects in Pregnana Milanese, underscoring growing investor confidence in northern Italy as demand for AI computing capacity continues to accelerate. The projects represent more than additional real estate investment. They reflect a broader shift in European digital infrastructure, where operators increasingly prioritize locations capable of supporting high-density AI workloads with substantial power availability, fiber connectivity, and long-term expansion opportunities. As enterprises deploy larger AI models and governments strengthen digital sovereignty strategies, infrastructure investment is concentrating in established metropolitan ecosystems rather than emerging secondary markets.

Pregnana Milanese Emerges as Italy’s Next AI Infrastructure Cluster

Pregnana Milanese, located northwest of Milan, is quickly becoming a strategic destination for hyperscale infrastructure development. While Milan already hosts one of Southern Europe’s largest concentrations of commercial data centers, the neighboring municipality now attracts developers seeking large industrial sites capable of accommodating next-generation AI campuses. DAMAC Digital is constructing its MIL01 data center on the former Gefco-Citroën industrial property. The facility will occupy approximately 55,000 square meters and is expected to become operational by the end of 2028. According to industry infrastructure records, the company has submitted an initial 200MW power request to Italy’s national transmission operator, Terna, positioning the project among the country’s largest planned AI-ready facilities. The investment aligns with DAMAC Digital’s recently announced global infrastructure strategy. The company revealed plans to build an IT capacity landbank totaling 6GW across 35 sites in 13 countries spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Italy has emerged as one of its priority European expansion markets, reflecting increasing enterprise demand for regional AI compute capacity.

AiOnX Builds Large-Scale Innovation Campus Near Milan

Alongside DAMAC’s development, AiOnX is advancing another significant infrastructure investment through its Pregnana Innovation Campus. The London-based digital infrastructure developer acquired the site in late 2024 through parent company SWI Group and intends to transform it into a large-scale AI computing hub. The campus will span approximately 220,000 square meters, making it considerably larger than the DAMAC project in physical footprint. Planned capacity currently stands at 150MW following SWI Group’s successful allocation of an additional 60MW from Italy’s transmission network. Project planning has focused heavily on infrastructure readiness rather than land acquisition alone. The site benefits from direct proximity to a national transmission connection point while also providing immediate access to major transportation corridors that simplify equipment delivery and long-term operational logistics. According to previously disclosed project information, planning approval activities remain underway, with construction expected to conclude within roughly three years after approvals are secured.

Infrastructure Strategy Reflects AI Compute Requirements

The simultaneous development of two hyperscale campuses within the same municipality highlights how AI infrastructure planning differs from previous generations of cloud expansion. Large language models, enterprise AI applications, and accelerated computing environments demand significantly higher electrical capacity than traditional enterprise colocation facilities. Developers increasingly evaluate locations based on long-term power availability before construction begins, often securing transmission allocations years ahead of deployment. Connectivity has become equally important. Modern AI facilities require dense fiber interconnection to cloud regions, internet exchanges, and enterprise customers while supporting high-speed movement of increasingly large AI datasets. Pregnana Milanese offers direct access to the broader Milan connectivity ecosystem, making it attractive for operators seeking scalable digital infrastructure.

Milan Strengthens Position as Southern Europe’s Data Center Capital

The latest investments reinforce Lombardy’s leadership in Europe’s expanding data center market. Global cloud providers including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services already operate cloud regions within the Milan metropolitan area, creating an established ecosystem that continues attracting infrastructure investment. Industry estimates indicate that nearly 100 data center facilities are already operational or under development across greater Milan. Analysts expect the metropolitan region to add roughly 2GW of additional capacity over the next five years, representing an increase of nearly ten times today’s estimated operational capacity of around 200MW. Such expansion reflects broader structural demand rather than speculative construction. Artificial intelligence, enterprise cloud migration, sovereign computing initiatives, and digital transformation programs continue driving sustained requirements for high-density computing infrastructure across Europe.

Competition Shifts Toward Regional AI Infrastructure Leadership

The arrival of multiple hyperscale developments within Pregnana Milanese illustrates how competition among infrastructure providers increasingly centers on securing strategic locations capable of supporting AI-first deployments. Rather than competing solely on available rack space, developers now differentiate through power access, network density, expansion potential, and proximity to established digital ecosystems. Those characteristics have become essential as enterprise customers migrate from conventional cloud workloads toward GPU-intensive AI environments requiring far greater computational resources. Italy’s northern technology corridor appears well positioned to benefit from this transition. As hyperscale operators, AI infrastructure specialists, and institutional investors continue directing capital toward the Milan region, projects such as DAMAC Digital MIL01 and AiOnX’s Pregnana Innovation Campus could help establish the area as one of Europe’s most significant AI infrastructure clusters over the coming decade.
