Izmir data center

DAMAC Digital and Vodafone Türkiye have inaugurated the first phase of an Izmir data center backed by an initial investment of approximately $100 million, marking a significant expansion of Türkiye’s digital infrastructure footprint. The facility starts with 4 megawatts of capacity and carries a longer-term plan to scale to 20 MW as demand for cloud, artificial intelligence and data-intensive computing develops. The companies expect their broader partnership to bring total investment to approximately $300 million, placing the project within a substantially larger infrastructure strategy. At 7,500 square metres, the facility is designed to accommodate more than 650 cabinets, giving the development a meaningful role in the country’s next phase of digital capacity growth.

$100 Million First Phase Sets Up Larger Expansion

The opening gives DAMAC Digital and Vodafone Türkiye a physical platform from which to pursue capacity growth beyond the initial deployment. A 4 MW starting footprint provides an immediate operating base while the planned expansion to 20 MW creates room for substantially greater computing demand over time. The distinction matters as data center requirements increasingly shift from conventional enterprise workloads toward AI, cloud services and higher-density computing environments. The planned investment trajectory also signals that the partners view the Izmir facility as a long-duration infrastructure asset rather than a limited capacity addition.

Hussain Sajwani, Founder of DAMAC Group and Chairman of DAMAC Digital, emphasised the foundational role of advanced digital infrastructure for national competitiveness, innovation, and sustainable growth, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and data-driven technologies reshape economies. His positioning places the project within a broader economic argument: digital infrastructure increasingly determines how effectively countries can support technology-intensive industries. For DAMAC Digital, the Izmir development therefore extends beyond physical server capacity into the strategic infrastructure required for emerging digital services. The company’s investment also reflects the growing importance of infrastructure that can support increasingly demanding computational workloads.

Vodafone Türkiye Targets Cloud and Data Sovereignty

For Vodafone Türkiye, the project extends a longer-term investment in the country’s digital future while adding dedicated infrastructure to its existing network capabilities. Engin Aksoy, Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Türkiye, highlighted the project as a continuation of Vodafone Türkiye’s long-term investment in the country’s digital future. Aksoy noted that the facility will not only scale Vodafone’s infrastructure but also reinforce Türkiye’s cloud capabilities and data sovereignty, supporting critical data processing and AI needs for businesses. That combination gives the project relevance beyond telecom infrastructure, particularly as enterprises place greater emphasis on where sensitive workloads and business data are processed.

The data-sovereignty dimension could become increasingly important as businesses adopt AI systems that require access to large volumes of corporate and operational information. Local infrastructure can give enterprises greater control over data processing environments while supporting requirements around resilience, latency and regulatory considerations. Vodafone Türkiye’s role also gives the development a direct connection to a major telecommunications infrastructure platform, strengthening the relationship between connectivity and computing capacity. In turn, the facility can serve as an infrastructure layer for businesses that need cloud and AI resources closer to their operational markets.

$300 Million Partnership Points Beyond a Single Facility

The projected $300 million total investment gives the Izmir project a broader strategic significance than the first-phase opening alone suggests. The initial $100 million deployment establishes the first operational layer, while the longer-term capital commitment creates a pathway toward a much larger infrastructure footprint. For DAMAC Digital, the partnership adds another component to its digital infrastructure ambitions, while Vodafone Türkiye gains additional capacity to support cloud, data processing and AI requirements. Together, the companies are building around three increasingly interconnected requirements: computing capacity, telecommunications connectivity and locally controlled data infrastructure.

The project also illustrates how data center development increasingly follows regional digital demand rather than concentrating exclusively in established European hubs. Türkiye’s position between Europe, Asia and Africa gives infrastructure investors a geographic proposition that extends beyond domestic demand. Izmir can potentially combine international connectivity with local computing capacity, allowing the facility to participate in regional digital traffic while supporting Turkish enterprises. The planned move from 4 MW toward 20 MW will determine how fully the project can capitalize on that strategic position.

Izmir Data Center Signals Türkiye’s Next Infrastructure Phase

The inauguration comes at a point when AI adoption is reshaping the definition of digital infrastructure. Capacity must increasingly accommodate accelerated computing, while operators must simultaneously address connectivity, power availability, data sovereignty and the ability to expand without rebuilding an entire site. DAMAC Digital and Vodafone Türkiye’s Izmir development addresses those requirements through an initial 4 MW deployment, GPU-ready architecture, international connectivity and a pathway toward 20 MW. Its significance will ultimately depend on how quickly demand converts the planned capacity into active workloads.

The $300 million partnership nevertheless provides a clear indication of the partners’ ambitions for Türkiye’s digital economy. Rather than treating data center capacity as an isolated technology investment, the project links computing infrastructure with cloud services, telecommunications networks and regional connectivity. Izmir’s submarine cable proximity strengthens that proposition by connecting the facility to routes spanning Europe, Africa and Asia. As AI and cloud adoption continue to increase the strategic value of computing infrastructure, the Izmir Data Center could become an important piece of Türkiye’s effort to expand its position within the Mediterranean’s emerging digital infrastructure market.
