Singapore-based data center developer DayOne has taken an early step into Finland’s data center market with preliminary plans for a new facility in Klaukkala, within the municipality of Nurmijärvi. Importantly, municipal authorities have already begun processing a preliminary site sale, which signals early local engagement. At this stage, the project remains in its formative phase, yet it clearly reflects DayOne’s intent to deepen its Nordic presence.

Notably, this proposal builds on DayOne’s growing footprint across Finland. The company has already committed significant capital to the region through previously announced projects. These include a large-scale development in Lahti and a joint venture in Kouvola with a local partner. Taken together, these investments point to a long-term strategy focused on Nordic digital infrastructure rather than isolated expansion.

Project Scope and Regulatory Path

However, the Nurmijärvi project still faces a structured regulatory process. Authorities must grant several permits before development can proceed. At present, government approvals remain pending, and planners continue to evaluate phased construction options. If approvals move forward, the site could ultimately support up to 560 megawatts of grid-connected capacity.

During construction, employment would rise sharply. Over the longer term, operations would support several hundred specialized roles. Consequently, the project carries both near-term economic impact and lasting employment potential. Still, timelines depend heavily on regulatory clarity and zoning outcomes.

To support early-stage planning, DayOne has entered a site securing and development agreement with Fortum, Finland’s largest energy producer. Through this agreement, Fortum is actively supporting zoning coordination and early grid-connection planning. As a result, the project aligns more closely with national energy policy and infrastructure requirements from the outset.

Zoning, Sovereignty, and Local Engagement

Meanwhile, zoning activity is underway in the Sudentulli area of northern Klaukkala, where the facility is planned. At this point, authorities have not approved final land-use decisions. In addition, DayOne must secure permits from the Ministry of Defence alongside municipal and environmental approvals before construction can begin.

DayOne has stated that it continues active discussions with Finnish authorities. Relevant ministries remain informed about the project’s scope and intent. Moreover, the company positions the facility as a high value-adding data center aligned with Finland’s national data center roadmap and sustainability goals.

Beyond infrastructure, DayOne is also planning local engagement initiatives. The company is preparing a framework agreement to support education and skills development in Nurmijärvi. This effort includes potential collaboration with institutions such as Aalto University. At the same time, DayOne expects to work with local stakeholders on environmental protection and cultural initiatives, reinforcing its long-term regional commitment.

Capital Backing and Nordic Expansion

Finally, DayOne has strengthened its financial position to support Nordic growth. In late 2025, the company secured up to €1 billion in mezzanine financing from Brookfield and a global sovereign investor. Shortly after, in early 2026, it raised more than $2 billion in Series C equity commitments.

Together, this capital provides momentum for platform development across Finland and other strategic European markets. As a result, DayOne enters the Finnish market with both financial depth and a clear expansion strategy, even as regulatory reviews continue.
