EdgeConneX Backs Singapore’s AI-Ready Tropical Data Center Testbed

EdgeConneX has joined Singapore’s Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 as a top-tier anchor partner, bringing its engineering expertise

EdgeConneX has joined Singapore’s Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed Phase 2.0 as a top-tier anchor partner, bringing its engineering expertise into a program tackling one of the industry’s most demanding challenges: scaling AI computing in hot, humid environments without letting power and cooling demands erode efficiency. The company has committed to multiple years of support, including funding for shared infrastructure and participation in selected projects involving its high-density data center solution, Ingenuity. Singapore holds particular importance for EdgeConneX because the company operates its Asia Pacific regional headquarters there. The partnership also reinforces Singapore’s ambition to establish itself as an important hub for next-generation AI infrastructure.

The partnership comes as rising rack densities force operators to rethink conventional data center engineering. STDCT 2.0, led by the National University of Singapore’s College of Design and Engineering, will take technologies beyond laboratory testing and examine their performance under operating conditions that mirror commercial deployment. Moreover, the initiative builds on STDCT, which launched in November 2023 to strengthen Singapore’s capabilities in sustainable data center technologies for tropical environments. Phase 2.0 now focuses on AI-ready infrastructure, advanced liquid cooling, grid-responsive operations and ultra-high-density computing.

AI Density Raises the Cooling Stakes

For EdgeConneX, STDCT 2.0 creates a direct link between engineering research and the practical decisions that determine whether AI infrastructure can scale economically. The company will participate in collaborative research and development, technology integration and field validation while helping shape the consortium’s shared research infrastructure. The testbed will feature modular data center environments, advanced liquid-cooling and heat-rejection systems, detailed instrumentation, telemetry platforms and an AI-native digital twin for modelling, optimisation, predictive operations and lifecycle assessment. These capabilities can help operators identify technical risks earlier and refine infrastructure designs before committing them to commercial-scale facilities.

Tropical Cooling Enters its Phase

The company also views tropical cooling as a broader engineering challenge rather than a constraint unique to Singapore. EdgeConneX brings operational experience from Asia Pacific facilities that use advanced non-evaporative cooling systems for hyperscale and AI customers. That experience can give the consortium an operator perspective as researchers examine how cooling technologies perform under tropical conditions. The resulting insights could influence data center design and operations across markets facing similar environmental pressures.

Singapore Turns Testing Into Infrastructure Strategy

The partnership extends beyond EdgeConneX’s technology portfolio and places commercial deployment experience inside a broader research ecosystem. STDCT 2.0 operates as a technology- and operator-agnostic co-innovation platform that brings industry and academia together to evaluate, validate and de-risk infrastructure under real-world tropical conditions. NUS has centered the initiative on next-generation cooling, power, heat rejection and digital-twin technologies. The program therefore gives participants a shared environment to test infrastructure choices before commercial deployment.

STDCT 2.0 has attracted major infrastructure companies, highlighting Singapore’s push to make industry-backed experimentation part of its data center growth strategy. Schneider Electric became the program’s first Platinum Sponsor, while Eaton expanded its participation with about S$3 million committed across the first and second phases. EdgeConneX now adds another operator perspective as Singapore prepares infrastructure for rapidly expanding AI workloads. The consortium’s combination of academic research, technology expertise and operational experience could help shorten the path from experimental systems to deployable infrastructure.

A Commercial Testbed for AI Infrastructure

EdgeConneX will co-invest in the shared research platform and participate in field validation designed to move sustainable technologies toward commercial data center deployment. Operators increasingly need evidence showing how cooling, power, controls and compute interact as one system rather than as separate engineering disciplines. The testbed’s AI-native digital twin and high-resolution telemetry can generate operational data that helps teams model performance, identify risks and refine designs before major capital commitments. STDCT 2.0 therefore creates a practical bridge between experimental engineering and the economic realities of next-generation AI infrastructure.

For Singapore, the broader objective involves turning tropical operating conditions into an engineering advantage. The country continues to pursue sustainable data center growth while positioning itself as a regional AI hub, creating greater demand for infrastructure that can support high compute density with disciplined energy and water performance. EdgeConneX’s multi-year commitment adds another layer of commercial expertise to Singapore’s research-led approach. The collaboration could ultimately influence how tropical data centers manage AI-driven density, cooling requirements and resource efficiency well beyond the city-state.
