Data4 is committing €5 billion ($5.8 billion) to a new hyperscale data center campus in northern France, underscoring the accelerating race among European infrastructure operators to secure capacity for cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads. The project, located in Escaudain, represents the company’s largest development initiative in France and reflects broader industry efforts to strengthen Europe’s digital backbone. The investment arrives as enterprises and governments across the region increase spending on sovereign digital infrastructure. Rising demand for computing power continues to reshape investment priorities across the European technology sector.

The development will transform the former Parc des Soufflantes industrial site into a 33-hectare digital infrastructure hub. Data4 plans to build four next-generation data centers on the site, creating a campus designed to deliver up to 700 MW of capacity. The scale places the project among the more significant data center developments currently underway in Europe. Demand from hyperscale cloud providers and AI-focused enterprises has driven operators to pursue larger and more energy-intensive facilities. Data4 selected Escaudain for its strategic position within Europe’s primary connectivity corridors. The location offers proximity to major digital markets including Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin, commonly known as the FLAP-D region. Access to established energy infrastructure and a skilled regional workforce also influenced the company’s site selection process. These factors have become increasingly important as operators seek locations capable of supporting long-term expansion plans.

The campus is expected to serve organizations requiring large-scale computing resources across multiple industries. Cloud adoption trends continue to drive demand for new facilities, while AI deployments require significantly greater processing and storage capabilities than traditional enterprise workloads. Operators across Europe are responding by accelerating construction schedules and expanding available capacity. Data4’s investment signals confidence that demand growth will remain strong throughout the decade.

AI Demand Reshapes European Infrastructure Investment

The Escaudain project emerges at a time when AI applications are creating unprecedented requirements for data processing infrastructure. Large language models, machine learning systems and advanced analytics platforms require dense computing environments capable of handling substantial workloads. As a result, data center operators are increasing capital expenditures to capture expected growth opportunities. Infrastructure availability has become a critical factor in determining where future AI investments can scale efficiently. European policymakers have also emphasized the importance of strengthening regional digital sovereignty. Investments in domestic infrastructure support efforts to reduce reliance on external capacity while ensuring businesses can access secure computing resources within the region. Data center development has therefore become a strategic priority that extends beyond commercial considerations. The Escaudain campus aligns with these broader objectives by expanding local infrastructure capacity and supporting future technology adoption.

Olivier Micheli, President & CEO, Data4, said, “This project in a highly strategic region at the crossroads of Europe’s connectivity and communications networks, with the support of national, regional and local stakeholders, will help revitalize the area through the digital industry while building the sovereign, sustainable and competitive infrastructure that Europe increasingly needs.” The new French campus forms a key component of Data4’s wider growth roadmap across Europe. The company currently operates 10 campuses spanning six European countries and has outlined plans to invest more than €20 billion ($23 billion) across the continent by 2030. The strategy reflects management’s expectation that demand for digital infrastructure will continue expanding as cloud adoption deepens and AI deployments move into production environments.

Data4 joins a growing list of operators scaling their European footprints to meet future requirements. Competition for suitable locations, power availability and connectivity resources has intensified as developers seek to secure capacity ahead of anticipated demand. Consequently, large-scale projects such as Escaudain have become increasingly important in defining the next phase of Europe’s digital infrastructure landscape. Operators that establish strategic capacity early may gain a significant advantage as computing requirements continue to rise.

Industrial Redevelopment Meets Digital Infrastructure Growth

Beyond its technology implications, the project also represents a significant industrial redevelopment initiative. The transformation of the former Parc des Soufflantes site reflects a broader trend in which legacy industrial assets are being repurposed for digital infrastructure development. Regional authorities increasingly view data center investments as a catalyst for economic activity, workforce development and long-term competitiveness. The Escaudain campus illustrates how digital infrastructure projects can align with wider economic revitalization goals.

Moreover, the investment highlights how data centers have become foundational assets in Europe’s digital economy. The convergence of cloud computing growth, AI adoption and digital sovereignty objectives continues to drive record levels of infrastructure spending. With a planned capacity of 700 MW and a multi-billion-euro commitment, Data4’s Escaudain development positions the company to play a central role in supporting Europe’s next generation of computing demand. As AI-related workloads accelerate, projects of this scale are likely to become increasingly critical to the continent’s technology ambitions.
