GDD Advances 200MW Data Center Plans in Germany

A 200MW data center project in Schladen-Werla, Lower Saxony, has reached a significant planning milestone after the responsible grid operator confirmed the reservation of the required connection capacity. The project comes from gdd Green Datacenter Development, which has been developing the site since 2025 as a potential location for large-scale cloud and artificial intelligence workloads. The municipality unanimously approved the preparation of the development plan in April 2026, giving the project a formal planning path alongside the newly secured grid capacity. The site covers more than 140,000 square meters and could begin phased commissioning in 2030 or 2031 under the current development schedule.

GDD Moves Schladen-Werla Project Into Next Planning Phase

The proposed facility sits near Beuchte in the municipality of Schladen-Werla, within the Wolfenbüttel district of Lower Saxony. GDD plans around 200MW of connection capacity for infrastructure intended to support cloud computing and AI applications, putting the project among the larger data center developments currently advancing in the state. The company’s latest update indicates that major preliminary studies have largely progressed, while municipal planning and technical development continue toward the next phase. The grid reservation matters because large AI-oriented facilities increasingly need power availability established well before operators can commit to detailed infrastructure and construction programs.

The project reflects a development model in which power infrastructure forms part of the site strategy rather than a later utility requirement. GDD identifies regional wind and solar generation as sources that can be incorporated into the project’s energy concept, although the precise operating structure will depend on future commercial and technical decisions. The company has positioned itself between renewable power producers and data center operators, developing sites around grid access, renewable generation and potential heat customers. That approach gives the Schladen-Werla proposal a broader infrastructure role, linking digital capacity with the energy assets already present across the surrounding region.

Renewable Power And Heat Recovery Shape Site Strategy

The energy concept is central to how GDD is positioning the Schladen-Werla development. Wind and solar parks located in the surrounding area could form part of the project’s energy framework, although the company has not yet specified how those resources will translate into the final operating model. The distinction matters because renewable generation availability does not by itself determine the electrical architecture, procurement structure or operational profile of a 200MW facility. Those details will depend on the future operator, power arrangements and technical design selected as the project advances.

Heat recovery represents the second major infrastructure connection beyond electricity. GDD intends to examine how waste heat from the facility could serve the local municipality, with the detailed heat-use concept still requiring further technical development. That could connect the data center’s thermal output with nearby residential or commercial demand, creating a local energy pathway alongside its digital infrastructure role. However, the company has not yet established a final heat network design or confirmed specific customers for recovered heat.

Lower Saxony Data Center Pipeline Continues Growing

Schladen-Werla is emerging alongside several other large-scale data center proposals across Lower Saxony. Renewable energy company Friesen Elektra is exploring a separate data center at its planned Wasserstoffpark Friesland near Sande, where the wider hydrogen project targets 400MW of power generation and the proposed data center would require a zoning exemption. That proposal remains at an earlier stage, with no data center IT capacity publicly disclosed, while the company has discussed using regional green electricity and extending planned water infrastructure for cooling.

Telis Energie Deutschland has pursued an even larger proposal near Hanover, submitting initial planning materials for a data center campus in Mehrum within the Hohenhameln municipality. The proposal covers roughly 37.98 hectares and remains subject to the municipal planning process, with no planning decisions taken when the company made its March 2026 announcement. Reports have described the wider concept as a potential 500MW data center campus, underlining the scale of the power demand now attached to digital infrastructure projects in the region. The parallel developments show how Lower Saxony is becoming a significant planning ground for projects that combine large electricity requirements with renewable-energy development.
