Google and Intel announced an expanded multiyear partnership on April 9 for Google Cloud to continue using Intel AI infrastructure and to deepen joint processor development. The agreement extends Google Cloud’s use of Intel Xeon processors, including the latest Xeon 6 chips, across AI, cloud, and inference workloads. Google has deployed Intel Xeon chips across its cloud infrastructure for over two decades, making this one of the longest-standing supply relationships in the hyperscaler market.
The partnership also expands co-development of custom infrastructure processing units, or IPUs, which accelerate and manage data center tasks by offloading them from CPUs. The IPU collaboration, which the two companies launched in 2021, will now focus on custom ASIC-based designs that target specific data center workload categories. Intel declined to share pricing details for the expanded agreement.
The deal arrives at a strategically significant moment for Intel. The company has faced sustained pressure in the AI compute market from Nvidia and AMD, whose GPU architectures have dominated AI training and inference deployments. However, the demand for CPU-class and custom silicon for non-GPU workloads, including inference orchestration, data preprocessing, and network management, has remained robust as hyperscalers build out increasingly heterogeneous compute stacks. Intel’s Xeon franchise and its emerging IPU capability position it to serve those roles within the broader AI infrastructure ecosystem.
For Google Cloud, the expanded partnership reinforces its strategy of deploying heterogeneous compute architectures that combine GPUs, TPUs, and CPU-class processors to serve different workload categories. As agentic AI workloads drive demand for inference infrastructure with different performance profiles than training, the role of general-purpose and custom processors within the data center stack is growing alongside GPU capacity. The expanded Intel collaboration is part of how Google Cloud is building the compute diversity its infrastructure strategy requires.
