India is positioning its data centre industry for a potential investment wave of more than $200 billion as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services push demand for computing capacity. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made the case during a CEO-level roundtable focused on improving the ease of doing business and accelerating the development of India’s digital infrastructure. The discussions brought together data centre operators, hyperscalers, cloud providers, power companies, equipment suppliers, real estate and construction firms, global investors and representatives from central and state governments. The breadth of participants reflects how data centres have moved beyond a niche technology infrastructure segment and become a strategic investment priority for India.
Goyal described the opportunity in unusually broad economic terms, linking data centres with semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. He said, “India is the world’s best location to set up data centres..,nothing less than $200 billion can be seen coming into the data centre industry.” The statement places the sector alongside other industries that New Delhi expects to support long-term economic expansion and its ambition of building a $30 trillion economy by 2047. For the data centre industry, the more significant message lies in the government’s willingness to treat capacity, power and digital infrastructure as foundations of national economic competitiveness.
India Data Centres Enter a Larger Investment Cycle

Traditional cloud demand already required large facilities, but AI workloads introduce higher rack densities, greater cooling requirements and larger power loads. The scale of announced investments from international technology companies reinforces that trajectory. India wants to establish itself as a major global location for data centre capacity, supported by its large digital economy, expanding AI ecosystem and growing manufacturing base.
