A massive power outage swept across Spain and Portugal, leaving millions without electricity, according to euronews.
In Portugal, officials confirmed to local media that the blackout affected the entire country, while similar accounts emerged from Spain. Madrid’s Barajas International Airport lost power, disrupting operations, and telecommunications services were also impacted. Airports across the region experienced significant disruptions as a result.
Residents in Andorra and parts of southern France near the Spanish border also reported being affected. Some outages were even recorded as far away as Belgium, based on the latest reports.
While the exact cause remains uncertain, domestic media suggest the issue stems from problems within the European electric grid, which disrupted the Iberian Peninsula’s national networks. Additionally, a fire on Alaric Mountain in southwestern France, which damaged a high-voltage power line between Perpignan and eastern Narbonne, is being considered a possible contributing factor.
Meanwhile, speculation has grown over the possibility of a cyberattack, as per The SUN. Some commentators have raised fears of a “Russian cyberattack,” citing past incidents targeting European infrastructure. The Portuguese Ministry of Internal Administration stated it is not ruling out a cyberattack as a potential cause. However, Spain’s Cybersecurity Coordination Office cautioned that it is still “too early” to draw any conclusions about the source of the disruption.
This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
