Yotta Data Services has announced the construction and operational launch of the National Data Center-North East Region, or NDC NER, ahead of the AI Impact Summit 2026. The facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The data center has been developed on behalf of the National Informatics Centre under the Government of India. With this launch, a significant boost has been given to India’s digital infrastructure in the North-East. At the same time, the project is being viewed as a step toward strengthening digital and data sovereignty.
Constructed as a greenfield project from the ground up, the Tier III, IGBC Gold-rated facility is the largest data center commissioned in Assam so far. It is also among the most advanced government data centers in Eastern India.
Built for Resilience and Long-Term Scale
Importantly, the facility has been designed to operate in Seismic Zone V, one of the country’s most earthquake-prone areas. Construction was carried out under challenging geotechnical conditions, including high groundwater levels and weak soil strata. As a result, deep load-bearing piles were installed to create a stable and durable foundation. Structural safety standards have been strictly adhered to, and fire-rated external facades have been incorporated to enhance resilience.
The G+5 building spans a 4,000 square meter campus. At present, it supports 200 racks with a 2 MW IT load. However, built-in scalability has been integrated into the design, allowing capacity to be doubled in the next phase. Overall, the data center has been engineered for a total power design capacity of 8 MW. Consequently, it is considered the largest data center in the North-East region and is expected to support growing cloud, AI, and digital governance demands.
Focus on Sovereign and Secure Governance
NDC NER has been purpose-built to host sensitive government data within a secure and high-availability environment. Through this infrastructure, e-governance platforms and citizen-facing digital services across the North-East are expected to be strengthened. Furthermore, improved data localization and operational continuity are anticipated.
Multi-layered redundancy has been incorporated across power, cooling, networking, and security systems. The facility is supported by diesel generator-backed power infrastructure, redundant UPS and battery systems, and an advanced Building Management System. In addition, a dedicated Network Operations Centre and Security Operations Center have been established. These systems are intended to ensure uninterrupted service delivery for mission-critical workloads.
Sustainability features have also been integrated. A 104 kW rooftop solar installation has been deployed, while energy-efficient cooling systems and water treatment infrastructure have been implemented. Green building practices aligned with national sustainability goals have been followed throughout the project.
Commenting on the development, Sunil Gupta, Co-Founder, CEO and Managing Director of Yotta Data Services, said digital sovereignty has become foundational to India’s economic and technological future. He added that the facility is intended to serve as a secure digital backbone for government data, citizen services, and future AI workloads.
With its scalable architecture and high-availability design, the data center is expected to support next-generation applications, including data-intensive analytics and AI-driven governance systems. Meanwhile, Yotta continues to operate hyperscale and edge data center campuses in Navi Mumbai, Greater Noida, Gujarat, and other strategic regions. Together, these facilities are being positioned as a nationwide sovereign infrastructure network designed to support government and enterprise workloads within India’s borders.
