Data Center Valley Anchors Kazakhstan’s AI Ambitions

Kazakhstan is making one of the largest AI infrastructure bets in Central Asia. The country has signed a $10 billion agreement with Nvidia and Armenian-American cloud company Firebird to build a massive AI and data center hub known as Data Center Valley. The project forms a central pillar of Kazakhstan’s Digital Qazaqstan strategy, a national initiative designed to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption, cloud infrastructure development, and data-driven governance through 2029.

Officials expect the investment to transform Kazakhstan into a major digital hub connecting Europe and Asia. They also believe the project will attract global technology companies while creating thousands of high-skilled jobs.

Data Center Valley Begins With a 125MW Facility

The development will take shape near the northern city of Ekibastuz in the Pavlodar region. Phase one of the project carries an estimated value of $5 billion and includes the construction of a 125-megawatt data center.Operations are expected to begin in 2027.

Kazakhstan has not yet disclosed full details regarding the second phase. However, the overall project value could reach $10 billion as infrastructure expands over the coming years. Government officials view the initiative as the foundation of a new AI-powered economy. The facility will support large-scale AI training, cloud services, high-performance computing, and future digital applications.

Digital Qazaqstan Moves Beyond Traditional Digitization

The project aligns with Kazakhstan’s broader Digital Qazaqstan development roadmap. Unlike earlier digital transformation programs focused on automating services, the new strategy aims to build a fully integrated data-driven economy. Officials want artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and advanced computing to become core components of public administration and economic development.

According to government statements, the initiative represents a transition toward a cognitive economy where data serves as a strategic national asset. As a result, investments in AI infrastructure have become a top priority.

AI Infrastructure Becomes a National Strategy

Kazakhstan recently established dedicated leadership focused on artificial intelligence and digital development. The government sees AI infrastructure as a long-term economic growth engine rather than simply a technology investment. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev described Data Center Valley as a critical platform for the country’s emerging AI economy. He stated that Kazakhstan is systematically building national AI infrastructure and positioning the project as a foundation for future AI-driven services and innovation.

Power Capacity Supports Long-Term Expansion

Large-scale AI data centers require significant energy resources. That challenge has become increasingly important as countries compete to attract AI infrastructure investments. Kazakhstan currently faces a nationwide electricity generation deficit. Despite those constraints, officials say the Ekibastuz region offers sufficient power availability for the project.

The area currently provides approximately 300 megawatts of available capacity. Authorities plan to expand that figure to one gigawatt in the coming years. Access to scalable power infrastructure played a major role in selecting the site. If completed as planned, the project could become one of the largest AI-focused infrastructure developments in Eurasia.

Economic Impact Could Reach Billions

Government projections suggest Data Center Valley could generate at least $3 billion in annual export revenue once fully operational. Officials also expect the project to attract foreign investment, strengthen domestic technology capabilities, and create a new ecosystem for AI innovation.

Furthermore, policymakers believe the development will improve Kazakhstan’s position in the global competition for AI infrastructure. The country hopes to leverage its geographic location, growing digital economy, and energy resources to attract cloud providers, AI companies, and hyperscale operators.

Nvidia and Firebird Expand Regional AI Footprint

The agreement also strengthens Nvidia’s growing presence in emerging AI markets. Firebird, Nvidia’s partner in the initiative, has already been working on a major AI infrastructure project in neighboring Armenia. That development aims to establish Armenia as a technology and innovation hub within the South Caucasus.

Earlier this month, Firebird announced that the first phase of its Armenian AI project had entered the final stage of construction and equipment deployment. The company believes its experience in Armenia will help accelerate deployment in Kazakhstan. Firebird CEO Razmik Ovakimian said the project would bring cutting-edge U.S. technologies into Kazakhstan while helping the country compete among the world’s leading technology nations.

Kazakhstan Joins the Global AI Infrastructure Race

The Data Center Valley initiative highlights how AI infrastructure investment is expanding beyond traditional technology markets. Countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe are increasingly investing in data centers, AI compute capacity, and cloud infrastructure to capture economic opportunities created by artificial intelligence.

For Kazakhstan, the $10 billion project represents more than a data center investment. It signals a national effort to establish a leadership position in the next generation of digital infrastructure. If execution remains on schedule, Data Center Valley could become one of the most significant AI infrastructure projects in the region and a key driver of Kazakhstan’s digital economy ambitions through the next decade.
