Compute Campuses

The language around intelligence is starting to have as much importance as the structures that support it. As the physical presence of AI grows into neighborhoods, business areas and energy systems the words used to explain that growth are getting attention. OpenAI prefers the term “compute campuses” of “data centers” which makes the link between technology and industrial growth more clear. The difference might seem small. Words don’t usually work alone when an industry is facing more questions about its expansion. A data center is a known type of structure. OpenAI uses the term to describe an investment in computing, energy systems and trained workers, not just the buildings that have servers. Both names can refer to the place but they help people see the purpose in different ways. The interesting question is why this difference is important now.

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly.
