Carbon Accounting

AI infrastructure has changed the way electricity demand behaves, and that change is exposing weaknesses in how businesses report their environmental performance. Large computing workloads can operate continuously, drawing substantial power through nights, weekends, seasonal changes, and periods when renewable generation falls below expected output. An annual renewable electricity contract can cover the same volume of electricity that a facility consumes without ensuring that clean generation actually supports its operations when demand occurs. This creates an accounting problem that becomes harder to defend as computing demand grows and enterprise customers examine the physical conditions behind environmental claims. Electricity procurement still matters, but the timing and location of generation now determine whether a renewable purchase reflects the operating reality of an AI workload. The central question is no longer simply how much renewable electricity a business has contracted, but how closely that electricity aligns with the power its infrastructure actually consumes.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
