Schneider Electric Debuts Hybrid Cooling For AI

Hybrid Liquid Cooling

Schneider Electric is pushing deeper into AI data center thermal infrastructure with a new coolant distribution unit designed around a practical problem: operators need more liquid cooling without rebuilding entire halls. The company’s WCDU combines liquid and air cooling in a corridor-oriented architecture that can deliver up to 3.5MW of cooling capacity from a single unit. The design gives operators a way to introduce liquid cooling into facilities that already depend on fan-wall systems, while preserving flexibility as AI workloads and rack densities change. The move expands Schneider Electric’s Motivair portfolio and strengthens its position in a market where cooling architecture increasingly shapes how quickly AI capacity can come online.

Schneider Electric Targets AI Cooling Bottleneck

The WCDU addresses the growing thermal requirements of high-density AI infrastructure by combining coolant distribution with compatibility for fan-wall air cooling. Schneider Electric designed the system for technical corridors, placing key cooling equipment outside the white space and using top-entry connections to simplify installation and maintenance. A single unit can provide up to 3.5MW of cooling at 1.5 liters per minute per kilowatt, while configurations operating at 2.0 liters per minute per kilowatt can reach 2.5MW. Up to 20 WCDU units can operate together, giving operators a path toward the cooling requirements of 30MW to 40MW data halls.

The significance extends beyond the headline capacity because AI facilities rarely arrive with perfectly predictable thermal requirements. Operators can change the balance between liquid and air cooling without completely redesigning the data hall, allowing infrastructure decisions to follow actual workload requirements rather than forcing every rack into the same cooling architecture. The WCDU uses integrated pumps, heat exchangers and other components within a single steel frame, while its zero-lateral-clearance configuration supports installations where existing floor space limits equipment placement. Schneider Electric says the architecture can give facilities already using fan walls a simpler route toward liquid cooling retrofits.

Schneider Electric Links Cooling To Deployment Speed

Andrew Bradner, Senior Vice President of the Cooling Business at Schneider Electric, said: “As the only CDU that brings together both liquid and air cooling within a single solution, we’re delivering a level of flexibility the market hasn’t seen before,” said Andrew Bradner. “This approach allows operators to deploy more efficiently, support a wider range of liquid cooling infrastructure configurations, and significantly reduce time to deployment.”

The deployment argument matters because AI capacity increasingly depends on how quickly operators can integrate power, compute and thermal systems rather than simply procure GPUs. A cooling system that fits existing layouts can reduce the physical changes required before high-density workloads reach production. Meanwhile, the corridor-based design puts service access outside the primary compute area, which can help operators manage maintenance without treating the white space as a constantly changing mechanical environment. Schneider Electric’s approach makes cooling architecture part of the deployment equation rather than a downstream facilities decision.

Lenovo Partnership Extends Schneider Electric’s Decarbonization Reach

Schneider Electric’s cooling push comes alongside a separate expansion of its relationship with Lenovo through Lenovo 360 Circle. Lenovo announced on September 21 that Schneider Electric would join the community as a strategic ally, giving eligible channel partners access to Schneider Electric’s Decarbonization Champion initiative, carbon-management tools and advisory support. The program covers emissions measurement, reduction opportunities and the development of practical decarbonization roadmaps, with participating partners moving through education, measurement, planning and implementation stages. Lenovo 360 Circle currently spans more than 861 partners across 68 markets, according to Lenovo.

The connection matters because Schneider Electric is expanding its role beyond the equipment inside an AI facility. Its liquid-cooling portfolio addresses the physical infrastructure required to operate increasingly dense compute, while the Lenovo partnership extends its sustainability advisory capabilities into the IT channel. These activities target different layers of the data center ecosystem, but both place Schneider Electric closer to the operational decisions that determine infrastructure efficiency. The combination gives the company a broader route into AI infrastructure spending than cooling hardware alone.

WCDU Adoption Will Test The AI Cooling Thesis

The commercial test for the WCDU will come from deployment scale, customer conversion and the speed at which AI operators adopt hybrid cooling architectures. Schneider Electric says the unit will begin shipping in select regions in October 2026, with U.S. pre-orders scheduled to open in early 2027. Large orders would give the company evidence that operators value retrofit flexibility and corridor-based serviceability alongside megawatt-scale cooling. Weak adoption, delayed deployments or slower-than-expected AI facility construction would create a different signal for the investment required to expand this part of the business.

For Schneider Electric, the larger opportunity sits in controlling more of the thermal infrastructure stack as AI rack densities rise. The WCDU does not eliminate air cooling or require every facility to adopt a fully liquid architecture, which gives it relevance across transitional environments where new AI racks coexist with conventional compute. That positioning could make cooling infrastructure less about choosing one technology and more about creating a controlled path between generations of compute. The result is a product launch that puts thermal flexibility at the center of Schneider Electric’s broader strategy for AI data center infrastructure.
