India’s digital infrastructure buildout has entered a period of rapid expansion, with India’s total data center capacity reaching around 1,700 MW by the end of 2025 and CBRE projecting another 500 MW of supply in 2026.  Rather than relying on a single short-term investment tally, the broader trajectory is visible in the sector’s expanding capacity and investment commitments, with CBRE reporting that cumulative data center investment commitments reached $126 billion by the end of 2025 and could exceed $180 billion in 2026. CBRE’s market research points to rising demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers and AI workloads as key forces behind this expansion. AI and cloud adoption are increasingly shaping demand for India’s data center capacity, with CBRE identifying accelerating AI workloads and hyperscaler requirements as major drivers of the market.

A Concentrated Bet on Digital Infrastructure

The scale of India’s digital infrastructure expansion becomes clearer through capacity data: the country’s live data center stock reached around 1,700 MW at the end of 2025, while another 500 MW of supply could come online in 2026. Consequently, major hyperscalers, cloud providers, domestic operators and institutional investors are shaping India’s digital infrastructure buildout as demand for compute capacity expands rapidly. The evidence points instead to a rapidly expanding digital infrastructure market, with large-scale data center projects emerging alongside growing cloud, enterprise and AI requirements. The market data points to deepening specialization around the infrastructure layer beneath AI, as demand expands beyond traditional cloud workloads to include neocloud providers, global capability centers and enterprise users.

Context matters when digital infrastructure expands at this pace, because rising cloud adoption, digitalisation, hyperscaler requirements and increasingly intensive AI workloads are supporting India’s data center market. Rather than measuring the contrast through an unverified short-term sectoral tally, the clearer evidence lies in the pace at which digital infrastructure capacity continues to expand across India’s major markets. That gap is not a rounding error; it represents a fundamental reallocation of investor attention away from consumption-linked plays and toward infrastructure that underpins computing power. Electronics manufacturing is also receiving policy support through India’s production-linked incentive programmes, which cover areas including electronics manufacturing, solar photovoltaic modules and advanced chemistry cell batteries. Nuclear and Conventional Power Enter the Frame

India’s data center expansion is increasingly tying digital infrastructure to questions of power availability, with CBRE identifying power access as an increasingly important factor in determining where new data center capacity can be delivered across Asia Pacific. Nuclear power is one potential source of firm electricity for an increasingly power-intensive economy, while India’s wider electricity strategy continues to combine conventional generation with rapidly expanding renewable capacity and storage.

The relevance of firm power becomes more pronounced as AI workloads increase electricity requirements and data center operators seek sites where sufficient power can be secured for large-scale deployments. High-density AI computing facilities require firm, round-the-clock power, and nuclear generation offers exactly that kind of baseload reliability that intermittent renewable sources cannot always guarantee. Read together, the expansion of data centers and the growing importance of power availability suggest that India’s digital infrastructure buildout cannot be separated from the electricity systems needed to support it at scale. Renewable Energy and Electronics Manufacturing

Solar power remains central to India’s renewable expansion, with government policy continuing to support domestic solar PV manufacturing alongside broader clean-energy deployment.  Its role is increasingly relevant to the broader infrastructure strategy surrounding India’s digital economy, particularly as data center operators and investors place greater emphasis on power availability and resilience. For manufacturers and infrastructure operators, renewable generation can complement grid supply and storage, helping diversify the electricity mix supporting an increasingly compute-intensive economy. The government’s support for solar PV and advanced-chemistry-cell battery manufacturing further reinforces the role of these technologies within India’s broader energy and industrial strategy. 

Ownership patterns within this investment wave reveal just as much as the sector breakdown itself. The ownership picture is more difficult to quantify from the available evidence, but CBRE’s market research confirms that India’s data center sector is attracting significant institutional capital alongside commitments from major domestic and international technology players. Foreign capital remains an important part of the market, with global technology companies and investors continuing to make large commitments to India’s digital infrastructure.  State governments, meanwhile, are increasingly using policy incentives and infrastructure programmes to attract AI and data center investment, adding another layer to India’s broader digital infrastructure push. What matters more clearly from the available evidence is that India’s digital infrastructure expansion is drawing participation from domestic operators, global technology companies, institutional investors and government-backed initiatives rather than depending on a single source of capital. 

What This Means for India’s Compute Ambitions

Viewed through a strategic lens, the expansion of India’s data center capacity and AI compute infrastructure describes more than a single period of corporate activity; it points to a country building the physical systems needed for a more compute-intensive economy.  The rapid expansion of data centers, combined with growing AI workloads and hyperscaler demand, suggests that compute infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important component of India’s digital growth strategy.  India’s compute push is being supported by both commercial infrastructure expansion and public initiatives, with the IndiaAI Mission having onboarded more than 38,000 GPUs for common compute capacity as of March 2026. That bet carries real execution risk, given that data center construction, chip supply, and grid connectivity all move on different timelines and face different regulatory hurdles.

India’s digital infrastructure landscape has clearly entered a new phase, defined by rapidly expanding data center capacity, rising AI workloads and increasingly capital-intensive investments in the systems required to support them. The expansion of India’s data center capacity and investment pipeline offers a clearer marker of where infrastructure demand is heading, with CBRE reporting around 1,700 MW of operational capacity at the end of 2025 and forecasting another 500 MW of supply in 2026.  Domestic companies remain important participants in this transformation, but the investment landscape also includes major foreign technology commitments, institutional capital and government-backed AI infrastructure programmes.  As these announced projects move from paper commitments toward physical construction, the coming quarters will test whether India’s compute ambitions can scale as quickly as its investment figures suggest.
