In its latest assessment, ICRA ESG Ratings assigned DIAL an ESG Combined Rating of 77 (Strong). This outcome reflects tangible progress, not ambition alone. For us, the significance lies in how sustainability has moved from peripheral reporting to operational reality at India’s busiest airport.

Strong Impact and Transition Signals Measurable Progress

From our vantage point, the balance between outcomes and intent is critical. ICRA ESG ratings highlighted this balance through two pillars, an Impact Rating of 80 (Outstanding) and a Transition Rating of 74 (Progressing). Together, they show that Delhi Airport ESG performance is rooted in delivery while continuing to strengthen long-term systems and governance.

This combination matters. It indicates that environmental and social gains are already embedded, even as the airport prepares for future growth.

Environmental Leadership Anchors Delhi Airport ESG Performance

Environmental performance stands at the core of this assessment. ICRA ESG ratings awarded DIAL an Environment score of 83 (Exceptional), underpinned by a 97 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions over five years. Emissions declined from 50,542 tCO₂e in FY2020 to 1,595 tCO₂e in FY2025.

This shift was driven by a complete transition to renewable power. Since FY2022, 100 percent of net electricity consumption has come from renewable sources, combining a 7.84 MW on-site solar plant with off-site hydropower. For us, this reinforces how Delhi Airport ESG performance is grounded in structural change, not temporary measures.

Efficiency, Accreditation, and Net-Zero Credibility

Energy efficiency further strengthens the story. ISO 50001-certified systems, real-time monitoring via an Integrated Building Management System, and targeted upgrades helped save 4.67 million kWh between FY2021 and FY2024.

Beyond energy, water and waste management reflect the same discipline. DIAL now recycles 100 percent of wastewater through a zero liquid discharge plant. It also recharges 106 percent of its annual freshwater use, making operations water-positive.

Waste volumes rose to 5,450 tonnes in FY2025. Yet recovery rates remained high at 98 percent, with less than one percent sent to landfill. Net Zero Waste to Landfill status across terminals demonstrates how operational growth has not diluted environmental control.

Social and Governance Outcomes Complete the ESG Picture

On the social front, ICRA ESG ratings assigned a score of 78 (Strong). With over 1,500 direct employees and a far wider indirect workforce, DIAL maintained zero high-consequence employee injuries between FY2023 and FY2025. Attrition stayed moderate at 7 percent.

Community programmes reached more than 100,000 people through education, healthcare, and skill development. Training initiatives supported 1,200 youth with a 96 percent placement rate, while medical outreach delivered over 47,000 treatments. These figures underline how Delhi Airport ESG performance extends beyond infrastructure into social impact.

Governance received a score of 68 (Strong). Board-level ESG oversight and transparent disclosures form a solid base, although ICRA has noted opportunities to improve gender diversity and supplier ESG monitoring.
