Asia Pacific & Middle East hyperscale data centre specialist, AirTrunk has announced the official opening of its new Japan headquarters in Tokyo’s iconic Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, marking a major milestone in its expansion across one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

Located on Level 43, the new headquarters triples the size of AirTrunk’s previous Tokyo office and is purpose-built to scale with rapid team growth. The space is designed as a world-class workplace, featuring multipurpose collaboration zones that foster innovation and reflect AirTrunk’s mission to enable Japan’s digital transformation. Employees will enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo’s skyline, including Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Tower, and the vibrant cityscape below – a setting that inspires big thinking and bold ideas.

AirTrunk Country Head, Japan, Nori Matsushita, said: “AirTrunk Japan has grown from a small team in 2020 with big ambitions into a strong organisation capable of executing at scale. By investing in our people and capabilities, we’re ensuring we can deliver on our customers’ ambitions. With our expanded headquarters and high-performing team, we’re positioned to meet unprecedented customer demand for hyperscale infrastructure.”

The new headquarters underscores AirTrunk’s commitment to powering Japan’s ambitions as a leading regional hub for AI and sustainable digital infrastructure. Since entering Japan, AirTrunk has invested US$1.57billion (JPY244 billion) across its three campuses – TOK1, TOK2 and OSK1. AirTrunk plans to have invested approximately US$8 billion (JPY1.2 trillion) over the coming years to complete these campuses and support future growth.

Recognised as a Great Place to Work® in Japan, AirTrunk currently employs over 100 people locally and plans to double its workforce in the near future to meet growing demand for cloud and AI infrastructure.

AirTrunk’s expansion is matched by a strong sustainability agenda, including: Japan’s first green loan for a data centre, financing TOK2; a target of 24/7 carbon-free operations; and alignment with Japan’s 2050 carbon neutrality roadmap. AirTrunk also invests in local communities where it operates through its social impact and community program, supporting initiatives such as: STEM scholarships at Science Tokyo, AI teacher training in high schools through CLACK in addition to biodiversity and conservation programs with Friends of the Kamenari River Association and Society for Ecological Restoration.

Japan has declared its ambition to be a trusted, resilient, and innovative AI hub that blends cutting- edge technology with social problem-solving. AirTrunk’s expansion and sustainability initiatives directly support this vision, futureproofing the nation’s digital infrastructure while enhancing global competitiveness.

Mr Yamada Kenji, a member of the House of Representatives who also serves as the State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, who recently attended the official opening of AirTrunk’s Japan headquarters said: “Japan’s digital future depends on strong partnerships with innovative companies like AirTrunk. This new headquarters and AirTrunk’s continued investment demonstrate a commitment to building resilient, sustainable digital infrastructure that supports our AI ambitions and benefits communities across the country.”

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
