Google Norway Data Center Exploration in Valer

We are tracking developments around a potential Google Norway data center in Valer, Norway. The Kommune of Valer confirmed that Google is exploring the possibility of establishing a data center in the municipality. However, authorities have shared limited project details so far.

The discussions point to Gylderåsen as the proposed location for the Norway data center. Local officials have not confirmed timelines, construction phases, or investment size. At this stage, the initiative remains exploratory.

Despite the early status, Valer has entered wider Nordic infrastructure discussions. Global technology companies continue to assess long-term capacity needs across the region.

Gylderåsen’s History as a Potential Data Center Site

The Kommune of Valer traced the project’s origins to a 2017 feasibility study. Cowi and Smart Innovation Norway conducted the assessment. The study identified Gylderåsen as a suitable data center location.

Local planners designated Gylderåsen as an industrial area in 2009. This classification supports large-scale infrastructure projects. As a result, current interest aligns with earlier land-use planning decisions.

This background shows how prior assessments continue to shape infrastructure evaluations across Norway.

Power Capacity Application Signals Early Assessment Phase

A report from Digi.no states that Google has applied for 480MW of power capacity. The application targets the NO1 power region. This request relates to the potential Norway data center in Valer.

Sondre Ronander, head of communications at Google Norway, confirmed the application to Digi.no. He explained that the request marks an early procedural step. He also clarified that construction should not be expected soon.

Google has not made a final decision on the Valer site. Companies often submit power applications during feasibility reviews. These steps allow operators to assess long-term viability.

National Strategy Supports Data Center Investment

The potential data center aligns with Norway’s national strategy to attract data center investments. The government promotes this strategy to support job creation and digital growth. It also emphasizes green digital transformation.

Norway’s renewable energy resources and favorable climate continue to attract global operators. Municipalities such as Valer therefore enter early-stage evaluations. These discussions typically precede confirmed commitments.

This framework connects local planning with national digital objectives.

Valer Within Google’s Broader Norway Expansion

Valer sits in Østfold, in Eastern Norway. The municipality now joins other regions under consideration for data center development. These discussions occur alongside active projects already underway.

Google is developing a data center campus in the Skien region. The company broke ground there in February 2024. The Skien facility will become Google’s first operational data center in Norway.

Google announced plans for a Norwegian data center region in October 2022. The Valer exploration fits within this broader roadmap. It does not replace existing developments.

Current Status Remains Preliminary

The Norway data center proposal for Valer remains under consideration. Authorities have not announced construction schedules or finalized site approvals. Statements from Google Norway confirm that evaluations continue. Further updates will depend on ongoing assessments and regulatory processes.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
