Google is reinforcing the energy foundation behind its expanding cloud and AI footprint in Oklahoma through a new long-term renewable electricity agreement. The company has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German energy developer RWE for 155MW of solar capacity from the Crooked Creek Solar project in McCurtain County. The agreement adds another major clean energy commitment in a state that has become increasingly important to Google’s infrastructure roadmap. It also reflects a broader industry shift toward securing dedicated power supplies before new digital infrastructure comes online.
Google Deepens Oklahoma Energy Investments
The agreement is linked to RWE’s Crooked Creek Solar development, where construction is expected to begin later this year. Once the facility enters commercial operation in 2028, it will supply electricity into the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), enabling Google to offset a significant portion of its electricity demand across Oklahoma. Rather than serving a single facility directly, the project strengthens the regional grid that supports Google’s growing operations. As a result, the company continues aligning renewable generation with rising computing demand across its infrastructure portfolio.
“Supporting a strong, stable, affordable grid is a top priority as we expand our infrastructure. Our agreement with RWE adds critical new generation to the local system, boosting the amount of affordable and reliable power supply for Oklahoma and the region,” said Will Conkling, director of energy and power, Google. The latest agreement arrives as Google continues scaling its presence in Oklahoma beyond its long-established Pryor data center campus. Originally announced in 2007 and operational since 2011, the campus has undergone multiple expansion phases to accommodate growing cloud services and enterprise workloads. Over the past year, however, the company’s ambitions in the state have accelerated alongside increasing AI infrastructure investments. Oklahoma has consequently become one of Google’s strategic regional markets for future digital capacity.
Renewable Power Keeps Pace With AI Infrastructure Growth
Google strengthened that commitment in August last year when it unveiled plans to invest $9 billion in expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure across Oklahoma. The investment marked one of the company’s largest regional infrastructure announcements and signaled confidence in the state’s long-term capacity to support hyperscale development. Earlier this year, momentum continued after local authorities approved a proposed Google data center project in Tulsa. Together, these developments indicate that power procurement and infrastructure expansion are advancing in parallel rather than independently.
The RWE agreement also represents Google’s second renewable energy purchase in Oklahoma this year. In May, the technology company signed another 15-year PPA covering 200MW of solar generation with Enlight, further increasing its clean energy portfolio within the state. Multiple renewable contracts across different developers provide additional supply diversity while supporting long-term electricity requirements for expanding digital operations. Therefore, Google’s energy strategy increasingly reflects a portfolio approach instead of relying on individual generation assets.
RWE Expands Its Oklahoma Renewable Portfolio
For RWE, the Crooked Creek project strengthens an already significant renewable energy presence in Oklahoma. Alongside the upcoming solar facility, the company owns and operates the 148MW Boiling Springs Wind Project in Woodward County. It also has six additional renewable energy developments under various stages of development across the state, representing a combined generation capacity of approximately 1.6GW. Those projects position Oklahoma as one of RWE’s key US renewable energy markets.
The partnership highlights a growing trend across the data center industry, where hyperscale operators increasingly secure renewable generation years before new facilities reach full operation. Long-term PPAs are evolving from sustainability commitments into strategic infrastructure decisions that reduce energy procurement uncertainty while supporting regional grid expansion. As AI workloads continue driving electricity demand higher, energy partnerships are becoming as essential to digital infrastructure planning as servers, networking, and land acquisition. Google’s latest Oklahoma agreement reflects that changing equation, placing power strategy at the center of infrastructure growth rather than treating it as a downstream requirement.
