NTPC Green Activates Khavda Solar Capacity Expansion

NTPC Green Energy Limited has begun supplying electricity from a newly commissioned 270 MW solar generation unit within the 1,200 MW Khavda-II Solar PV Project in Gujarat. The capacity entered operation through its subsidiary NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, marking a key milestone in the company’s renewable expansion strategy.

According to a regulatory filing, the solar unit represents the third operational phase of the Khavda-II development. The project achieved commercial operation status at 00:00 hours on March 11, 2026, enabling electricity supply to begin immediately. The Khavda-II facility forms part of India’s rapidly expanding solar infrastructure in Gujarat, a region increasingly positioned as a hub for large-scale renewable generation.

Capacity Expansion Strengthens NTPC’s Renewable Portfolio

The addition of the 270 MW unit pushes the total installed capacity of the NTPC Green Energy Limited Group beyond 9,562 MW. Consequently, the expansion reinforces the company’s accelerating transition toward large-scale renewable energy deployment.

At the broader group level, NTPC Limited now operates 88,544 MW of installed capacity and 87,464 MW of commercial capacity, according to the regulatory disclosure. The Khavda-II Solar PV Project is being developed and operated by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited. The project remains a central component of the group’s renewable build-out strategy across western India.

NTPC has continued to develop renewable infrastructure in Gujarat through a phased commissioning strategy designed to accelerate capacity additions while managing grid integration. Moreover, the Khavda region has emerged as one of India’s most significant renewable clusters, capable of hosting gigawatt-scale solar projects.

Recently, NGEL declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the first 50 MW capacity of the 200 MW Dayapar Wind Energy Project Phase-II, also located in Gujarat. The wind project forms part of a broader multi-technology renewable portfolio being deployed across the state.

Expansion Pipeline Targets Multi-Gigawatt Additions

NTPC Green Energy previously outlined an aggressive capacity expansion roadmap for the current financial year. The plan includes significant additions across multiple renewable locations in India.

The company targeted the development of approximately 1,000 MW at Khavda, 200 MW at Bhadla, and 250 MW at Kalasar as part of its solar expansion pipeline. In addition, NGEL plans to integrate 500–550 MW from its Ayana portfolio, bringing the expected capacity additions to roughly 2,300–2,400 MW before the end of FY 2025–26.

Furthermore, the company recently commissioned 91.6 MW of solar capacity in Andhra Pradesh, representing the second phase of a 250 MW project. That development increased the company’s commercial renewable capacity to 9,292.68 MW, reinforcing NTPC Green’s position within India’s rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

Overall, the commissioning of the Khavda solar capacity underscores NTPC Green Energy’s strategy to scale renewable infrastructure while strengthening grid-scale solar deployment across India’s high-resource regions.

Building an AI Startup Without Owning GPUs

Not owning GPUs has become the default, deliberate strategy for building an AI company — not a compromise founders accept reluctantly. H100 rental rates fell 64-75% in fifteen months, a dense ecosystem of neoclouds and inference-as-a-service providers now lets startups skip infrastructure entirely, and credit programs can fund a company’s first year before a founder writes a check
