The UK renewable energy market has gained a new heavyweight after Verdant Energy and Aura Power completed a merger that significantly expands their combined solar and battery storage ambitions. The transaction creates one of the country’s largest independent power producer (IPP) platforms focused on utility-scale solar generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Backed by infrastructure investor CVC DIF, the newly combined business enters its next growth phase with substantial operating assets and a large future development pipeline. The move reflects a broader shift across Europe’s renewable sector, where developers increasingly seek scale to secure financing, accelerate project delivery and strengthen long-term market positions.

Merger Brings Together Operating Assets and Long-Term Development Pipeline

The merged company combines Verdant Energy’s operating and under-construction renewable portfolio with Aura Power’s contracted development projects. Together, the platform now holds approximately 1GW of operational and under-construction solar and battery storage assets across the UK, while also controlling a development pipeline of nearly 10GW. The combined business will continue advancing selected battery storage opportunities across Europe as part of Aura Power’s existing regional strategy. As a result, the enlarged platform gains both near-term revenue-generating assets and a substantial pipeline capable of supporting future expansion.

Alongside the merger, CVC DIF secured financing from Eiffel Investment Group to complete the transaction, refinance existing junior facilities and provide capital for future project development. The additional funding strengthens the platform’s balance sheet while giving the combined business greater flexibility to advance construction and development milestones. Access to dedicated growth capital has become increasingly important as renewable developers compete to build larger projects in a rapidly evolving energy market. The financing package therefore supports both immediate integration and longer-term investment ambitions.

Combined Business Strengthens Independent Power Producer Strategy

Aura Power has built more than 2.1GW of solar and battery storage projects since its founding in 2013, taking developments to ready-to-build or commercialized status across the UK and international markets alongside former shareholder ib vogt. More recently, the company shifted toward an independent power producer model, reaching financial close on six UK solar projects and energizing its first operating project, Kemble, earlier this year. That transition positioned Aura Power to retain ownership of renewable assets rather than focusing solely on project development. The merger now accelerates that strategy by adding operational infrastructure and construction capabilities.

Verdant Energy has also expanded rapidly since launching in 2022. The company assembled a portfolio of approximately 660MW comprising utility-scale solar projects and co-located battery storage facilities across the UK. Its operating and under-construction assets complement Aura Power’s larger development pipeline, creating a platform capable of managing projects from early-stage development through commercial operation. Combined, the business will employ more than 75 professionals spanning development, engineering, construction, legal, commercial and finance functions.

Leadership Remains in Place Following Transaction

Aura Power Founder and Chief Executive Simon Coulson will continue leading the combined business while retaining a minority ownership stake. Maintaining existing leadership provides continuity as the merged platform integrates its project portfolio and advances future developments. The structure also preserves operational knowledge developed across Aura Power’s project pipeline while combining it with Verdant Energy’s delivery experience. Consequently, the leadership team now draws senior expertise from both organizations across every major business function.

Simon Coulson, Founder and Chief Executive of Aura Power, commented, “This merger with Verdant Energy, with the backing of CVC DIF, marks a transformative milestone for Aura Power. By combining our extensive development pipeline with Verdant’s robust delivery track-record, we are perfectly positioned to scale our IPP model. The deal provides us with both the financial strength and operational expertise to accelerate the delivery of critical solar and battery storage infrastructure, helping the UK meet its ambitious green energy targets.”

CVC DIF Expands Renewable Infrastructure Investment

For CVC DIF, the merger builds on its earlier investment in Verdant Energy while creating a larger renewable infrastructure platform positioned for sustained growth. Combining complementary operating assets with an extensive development pipeline provides greater scale across project origination, construction and long-term ownership. Investors increasingly favor platforms that integrate development expertise with operating assets, offering more predictable revenue potential and stronger financing opportunities. The transaction aligns with that broader investment strategy.

Caine Bouwmeester, Partner and Head of Renewable Energy at CVC DIF, added, “ This transaction builds on our original investment in Verdant, bringing together two highly complementary businesses to create a leading UK solar and BESS IPP with the scale, pipeline and delivery capability to generate long-term value. We look forward to partnering with Simon and the team as they take the business into its next phase of growth.”

The Broader Perspective

The merger signals more than simple portfolio expansion. It highlights how renewable energy developers are evolving into integrated infrastructure owners capable of managing projects across their entire lifecycle, from permitting and development to long-term operation. Larger platforms also improve access to institutional financing while creating operational efficiencies that smaller developers often struggle to achieve.

As battery storage becomes increasingly important to grid stability and renewable integration, companies with diversified solar and BESS portfolios are likely to attract greater investor interest. Verdant Energy and Aura Power now enter the UK market with the scale, capital backing and project pipeline needed to compete for larger opportunities while supporting Britain’s long-term renewable energy transition.
